Cheshire East is the happiest place to live in England, according to a national happiness report.

The borough bagged fifth place in the whole of the UK in the Office for National Statistics’ happiness survey and was hailed number one in England.

The study, between 2012-2015, asked 300,000 people to rate their happiness from one to 10 with 0-4 classed as ‘low’ and 9-10 ‘very high’.

The results are the latest in a series of accolades for the borough. Bollington’s Shrigley Road was named as the best in the country to start a family last year and Poynton the best place to both start a family and raise children.

Cheshire East has also been named best place to live in the northwest two years running in the Halifax Quality of Life survey.

People living in the Western Isles in Scotland were found to be, on average, the happiest in the UK.

Coun David Brown, Deputy Leader of the council, said the survey results were ‘wonderful news’ and added: “Cheshire East is a fabulous place to live, work, visit and do business.”

He praised the ‘strong local economy’, ‘vibrant communities’, ‘fantastic schools’ and beautiful areas.
