A century old jewellers has shown its commitment to staying in Macclesfield by opening a new town centre shop.

DJ Massey & Son Jewellers has replaced its two town centre shops with a new store on Market Place.

The firm has closed its shops on Chestergate and Market Place for the larger store.

The family-run firm first started trading in 1900 with a shop in Alderley Edge.

It is named after Donald Massey who started working in the Alderley Edge shop and took it over from the original owner.

He opened another branch in Cheadle which is still trading before the family opened the first Macclesfield shop on Chestergate 40 years ago and then another on Market Place 17 years ago.

Now grandson Don has replaced the shops with a new larger branch across the market square giving it a traditional refit in keeping with its heritage.

Don said: “We’ve invested a lot in this shop and have confidence in Macclesfield town centre. It would be good to see more done to develop this part of town.”

David Rutley, who cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony, welcomed the boost to the town centre.

He said: “This is good news for the redevelopment of our town centre and brings us a step closer to creating the distinctive town residents deserve.”
