Cheshire merger shock
Chris Morris10/ 9/2008
JOB LOSSES are on the cards and customers will NOT receive a windfall when Cheshire Building Society merges with banking giant Nationwide.
Chief executive Karen McCormick faced up to the double blows dealt to customers and staff in an interview with the Express at Macclesfield’s Castle Street headquarters on Monday.
No one is going to relinquish cash payments, especially in these uncertain times. I have never understood why people talk about "members" of Building Society as if they do loads of stuff for them and that being a member has lots of responsibilities etc. Its no different to putting money in a bank etc in my opinion. Why folk expect a cash handout for nothing is beyond me.

I have just read about the massive payments that are likely to be made to some executive directors of the Cheshire and Derbyshire building societies when they finally leave. This is payment for failure, but hardworking staff and loyal members will receive nothing. These individuals may be contractually entitled to the payments they will receive, but in the circumstances they should have the good grace to relinquish them.

Lets hope so SW.
BTW what a terrible picture of the Cheshire Chief Exec. No wonder they are merging with the Nationwide, certainly need help in the publicity department.

Typica of people not getting a windfall when they dont even understand the principles involved.
Its the daft "I'm disgusted" comments of the OAP that make me think Britain would be better off with a Benign Dictator than a democracy. Afterall, if people are either uneducated or thick then democracy cant work.
If the OAP gets a vote I want 10.

The Cheshire has been in existence for a long time. It has survived the consequences two world wars, a general strike, the depression and many other conditions which have an adverse effect on business. It has not survived the consequences of the bad management suffered during the past ten years or so. The responsiblity lies with those wo have formulated and implemented recent business policy, not with the employees who, of course, are the ones who will suffer most. Other building societies, eg the Nationwide, can cope with the present conditions. Why not the Cheshire?
