Pub athletes are the town’s real golden wonders

Alex Bell
27/ 8/2008

FORGET Team GB – propping up the bar at one town centre pub is Team Tavern.

The Beijing games may have resulted in Britain’s most successful Olympic medal haul for over 100 years, but The Waters Green Tavern in Macclesfield has nurtured a special sporting squadron of its own.

This article missed, for whatever reason, a very important point which is that Steve is attempting to cycle from John O' Groats to Land's End between 4 October and 12 October 2008 for charity!!!

The route he is taking is about 935 miles long, meaning he will be averaging 104 miles per day! He will be ably assisted by Rick Phillips, who will be the man in the support van.

Steve is raising funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Sponsorship forms are available at the Waters Green Tavern and the Nags Head. You can also donate online at http://www.justgiving.com/stevenmillar - please give generously!

"The Waters Green Tavern is one of the places I hate to get a call to. They attract more idiots per pound than most pubs. " - Taxi Driver

It's easy to make cheap, anonymous digs. I'm not defending the place, just pointing out that anyone who's ever spent any time there knows you're obviously making it up. The question is, why...

Just give over and shut up with nasty comments like that. Martin is a great guy and runs a good pub, ship shape and with little trouble.

Martin Webb, Do please stop whineing. I am sure there is a way forwards for you if you became positive in your thoughts for yourself. Have a laugh with your customers, Are you sure that you are not frightening them away with your miserable attitude in life.

No problems. I'll let him know. Cheers.

"Who do I have to sleep with to get an article like this in the Macc Express? As a Local Publican, it distresses me to see this kind of bias in our local press. At my establishment we have been running ongoing events to celebrate & support our fantastic olympians. How many column inches does this get in our fine local press? You guessed it, 0. If the Macc Express is so fond of giving out shameless advertisement then I want a piece of the pie." - Martin Webb

Maybe this is a genuine human interest story about people doing something positive that just happens to involve a local pub, rather than a publican blatantly trying to get free advertising - which is really what you've said about yourself and your aim. Brian and Tracey who run the Waters aren't mentioned once. In fact, the pub hardly gets a mention. It's about Becky and her mates.

So, why not try holding a genuine charity event (rather than a publicity stunt) and calling the news desk in plenty of time so they can cover it? After all, if it wasn't for stuff happening in the town, there'd be no newspaper to moan about.

" Whats Uncle Albert from fools and horses doing in the background?"

You really are pointlessly rude, aren't you... Tony's a great guy. I'll be seeing him tonight and will pass on your regards.
