Silk Road plans are ‘crackers’ say council

Rhiannon McDowall
20/ 8/2008

DRASTIC proposals to add two junctions along The Silk Road were refused by Macclesfield’s planning department yesterday, on the grounds it would be "crackers" to approve such a request.

In separate applications, Tesco and developers Blantyre Ltd applied for full planning permission to create a roundabout and slip road respectively along the A523, to improve access to their individual sites.

   Damien,

Rejecting the roundabout plan has nothing to do with missed opportunities for Macc. The opportunity on offer is for two massive non-local companies to increase their profits by bending the planning committee's will to their own. The councillors chose wisely in rejecting it.

Now, the plans for the town centre are being opposed partly, I believe, because they're being insisted upon for reasons no one can fully explain and without any clear benefits other than low-paid Mcjobs for locals, a retail landscape filled homogeneously with yet more shopping opportunities rather than a diversity of private businesses, and massive profits for the construction firm that proposed it. Yes, there are things Macc needs, but the town centre wiping from the map is not one of them. It's not necessary for every available inch of real estate to be turning out a profit for someone else at the expense of those who have to live here. Aesthetics matter too.

Note to the editor: Why, if the roundabout plans have been rejected, does the caption under the picture of Tesco accompanying this story read "Silk Road could see a new roundabout and slip road."?

How professional, to explain a refusal by saying "its crackers" - do they do all these press releases after a long lunch in the pub?

Isn't this just another example of Town Hall officials holding Macclesfield back?

Every attempt to make Macclesfield a 'modern town' is thwarted, yet all people ever seem to do is complain about the lack of amenities in the town.

The exciting town centre redevelopment is constantly being opposed and sent back to the drawing board and now this.

Improved shopping facilities and new jobs created.

Wake up Macclesfield, opportunity is knocking!

Senior planning officer John Knight isn't an elected official but the councillors are. Full marks to them for remembering that what the voters think has a direct bearing on them continuing to enjoy council positions come election time!
