Town pays tribute to famous son

20/ 8/2008

MACCLESFIELD’S most successful sporting son, three-time gold Olympian Ben Ainslie, may have one honour yet to come – the freedom of the town.

Britain’s greatest ever Olympic sailor steered his way to a third consecutive gold medal in Beijing on Sunday and there are moves now afoot to grant him Silk Town’s highest civic honour.

It all depends on how he feels associated with Macc. If he's lost all connection with the place there seems little point in honouring him, if on the other hand he still sees it as 'home' in some way he must be honoured.

Lets be honest, if he had have stayed in Macc he would probably be a binge drinking, bloated waster, he was lucky to get out when he did.

It's a tremendous achievement, but having left the town at 8 years old, does that really count as having grown up in Macc?

Seems like some folk are clutching at straws with this one...
