Post offices: 5 axed, 1 saved

Rhiannon McDowall
13/ 8/2008

RESIDENTS of Bollington Cross, Bollinbrook, Broken Cross, Gawsworth and Hockley now face longer journeys to post letters, pay bills and collect their pensions after the axe finally fell on their post offices.

Despite the tenacity of loyal users during six weeks of protests aimed at saving the six Macclesfield branches earmarked for closure, only Sutton Lane Ends has escaped the chop.

Petitions, appeals and even political pressure from MP Sir Nick Winterton wasn’t enough to change the minds of Royal Mail bosses at Post Office Ltd.

Its progress because they may be "profitable" but there are cheaper & quicker transaction channels. These could make bigger profits. Simple really.

How exactly does the shutting down of profitable post offices signify "progress", Satisfied Customer?

you are a bit out of date. bollinbrook post office has been shut down for 18 months to 2 years now. the owners failed a post office audit and had the franchise taken off them. they carried on the spar business until they cleared the shop and did a moonlight flit. last thing we heard they were wanted by the police as people had been posting and paying for parcels which never went into the postal system.

the closing of the other offices is nothing short of a national scandal.

I was there when Bollinbrook post office first opened, couldnt believe that one myself. just a short hop on a bus into town centre, two stops. (It was so close to town centre did not see the point of one there myself.) they do have one in Prestbury not far away from that one. Sutton is a different thing, they come from a long way in the hills to that one its for people further afield as well.

Martin just ignore him (S.C) he is just a wind up merchant, only here to try and stir up commotion. He is anti Winterton, anti Barlow, anti Express (so why bother reading) and anti establishment. He claims to post from abroad, claims Australia. He was not satisfied with this country but seems to like to snipe from afar. Many just will not comment when he has. It seems to be a thing with ex pats. They were not happy enough to stay here, and think that gives them the right to attempt to ruin things for others. A lot of posters have just stopped posting comments as a result.

Thats the kind of idiotic ranting I'd expect to hear from one of my locals SC. As a Publican I see people from all walks of life. In the real world not everybody has the Internet to pay bills or the mobility to get up to town once a week! Losing the local Post Offices is a travesty and a reflection of a money orientated world not thinking about the consequences of the older generations.

How many people post letters on a daily basis in anycase?

Surely the occassional letter posting task can be integrated into other weekly tasks. Paying bills? Thats what t'internet and phones are for. Collect pensions? just get it paid into your bank account.

There I have just thought up 3 ways round this problem (even me) off the top of my head. I am sure there are lots of others.

Instead of grumbling (Macclesfields favourite passtime) look for solutions, not problems, adapt, its key.

Fair play to Sutton, they probably deserve to keep theirs, the idea of keeping the Bollinbrook one was plain ridiculous. Should never have opened in the first place. Same applies to Bollington Cross IMO.

Nice to see Boss Hogg drop the campaign like a stone when it failed.

His political capital has plummeted even lower than previously considered possible.
