Curtis memorial is stolen
3/ 7/2008
A MEMORIAL stone for Macclesfield music legend Ian Curtis has been stolen from the town's cemetery.
The Hurdsfield-born Joy Division singer was 23 when he hanged himself in a Barton Street flat, in May 1980, ending the band’s meteoric rise to fame.
The kerbstone, at the Prestbury Road cemetery, has been a beacon for Joy Division fans who have visited the town on pilgrimmages from all over the world.
Now let's see if I have got this right. A Kings School has been, who fronted a mediocre group. He happened to be a drug addict, and alcoholic, an adulterer and a wife beater.
Has anyone asked the authorities if they had removed because it caused offense.

I just heard the terrible news and I'm absolutely shocked! Both by the news itself but also because I went to the cemetery just a few days ago.
Last week I went to Manchester, on vacation, together with a good friend of mine. And last Monday, June 30th, we decided to take the train to Macclesfield to visit Ian Curtis' final resting place.
After asking a number of people for help we finally located the curbstone at Macclesfield Cemetery. It was still there when we left around 1 pm and my last photo from the cemetery has the timestamp 12:36 pm on Monday.
I hope whoever took the curbstone will have the decency of returning it.
My best wishes on a speedy recovery, Bernt Rostad Oslo, Norway

I hope that when they are caught they are forced to apologise for the distress caused to his family and TRUE fans.

No real Joy Division fan would ever desecrate a grave and certainly not Ian's. This is the work of a sick animal.
