Fears for businesses after trains slashed

Chris Morris

Councillors are on track to lobby against "unacceptable" train service reductions through Macclesfield railway station.

At a cabinet meeting, members spoke of their fears that commuters and businesses will be hit hard after Arriva slashed services to Manchester and the south.

The proposed changes are to have only one arriva crosscountry train stopping at Macclesfield every hour instead of the present two and to reintroduce the hourly Manchester to Stoke-on-trent stopping service which was axed in the early 1990s. There are no proposals to change the number of virgin trains service other than to reduce the service in the manchester direction from 2 to 1, this simply reflects the service in the southbound direction
