Tesco plan to open huge store in village centre
Chris Hudson26/ 9/2007
SUPERMARKET giant Tesco is planning to open a massive store in the heart of Poynton – creating 150 jobs for residents.
The multi-national has earmarked the site of the Texaco garage, car showroom and former cinema on London Road South to build a huge 15,000 sq ft store.
The fact is no matter what anyone says or comments here saying they dont want the tesco, none of their views would be counted as we would be fighting a loosing battle with people like the developers who thought this project up and the goveners who are arrogant anyway and only listen to the good points and not take any of the bad points into account.

I am strongly against. Tesco seem to be taking over everywhere. Small shops in Poynton would suffer. Traffic problems are already bad in Poynton. There is often a tailback from the traffic lights past the proposed site. This would affect traffic turning into the site travelling south, which would cause a hold up at the lights.

I am shocked at the plans for a new Tesco in Poynton ,and agree with all the previous comments.
Isn`t it time that we stopped them from ruining all small businesses by refusing to use any Tesco?

I live in Poynton, and I do not want a big Tesco's there. It will spoil the atmosphere of the village, and ruin the small shops that us Poynton people love. There is Tesco's in Handforth, an express in Bramhall and Hazel Grove, therefore, why on earth is there a need for one in Poynton. I think it's disgraceful that we have not been consulted on this. (I only because aware of this news on the 06/10/07.

I am horrified about the news of the proposed Tesco here in our lovely village. There are already more than enough Tesco stores within a few minutes drive of here, so opening another one is ridiculous. We do not want the traffic, the noise and air pollution, a massive construction site or the competition for the local shops. We should all rise up together and fight.

Thank you all SO MUCH for supporting the peaceful demo. held last Saturday outside the Civic Hall against the Tesco proposals for Poynton village. I don't need to itemise the numerous reasons for not wanting Tesco in our village as you all well aware of what those are and I was not surprised to find the people of Poynton passionate about retaining the individuality of our village. We got 500 signatures within the 2 hours of the demonstration and Granada Reports gave us time on their 4.30pm news plus Macc.Express should have some coverage this week. We now need to get 1000's of signatures to copy and send to The Planning Officer, Macc.Borough Council- PLEASE do all you can. We'll keep you posted on the latest proceedings and thanks once again. What an awful thought another Tesco Store. So Councillor Clarke does not think the residents of Poynton will have many concerns, I call that being totally out of touch with the community.
Spread the word, it seems there are still people out there unaware of the proposed Tesco Store.
It will be a disaster for Poynton traders, residents and our roads !! Get signing the petitions in the local shops and hopefully in the village.

I'd just like to add my voice to the comments below, protesting about the new Tesco planned for Poynton. Like other people commenting, my principle concerns are the traffic congestion issue, the closure of Poynton's only petrol station, the probable closure of small local businesses in the village that I enjoy shopping at, and the fact that we are already amply provided with supermarkets in the area. If 70% of people choose not to shop locally there are probably many factors, including choosing to shop close to / en route from work.
I would also be concerned about the hours that Tesco plan to open the store. They often wish to be open 24 hrs. There are people living quite close to the planned site so opening hours would be an issue.

There are currently plans in place for a peaceful protest outside the Civic Centre in Poynton on the morning of Saturday 6 October. I urge any of you who are interested in voicing an opinion against this development to come along and sign the petition and let Tesco know how we feel. The local television news have also been contacted and may well give this some coverage if there are enough people in attendance.
Plus come along and lend some support before they send the bulldozers in....

Poynton already struggles with traffic along London Rd from the noise and air pollution this brings; Anymore traffic attending the area to visit the proposed shop will simply make matters worse.
We are already spoilt for choice not only for supermarkets in the area but there are 2 in Macc and 1 in Handforth Dean, not to mention the smaller tesco express stores in Hazel Grove, cheadle Hulme and Bramhall, prehaps they will want the schools and churches next.
I wonder what our local MP and councillors have to say on this matter, if they support it they won't be getting the votes of my family or many Poynton residents.

The idea that Tesco's are opening a store in Poynton is a disgrace. It sounds the death nell for the small town/village that Poynton is. The store will devalue property in the local area and is an unpleasent sight for local residence. 150 parking spaces will turn the already heavily congested Macc Rd into a over congested road, Clifford Rd will be a rat run worse than it already is.
The only petrol station in Poynton will dissapear and people will have to drive further to fill up, how green is that?
Other well established shops and businesses will go bust.
A listed buliding will be destroyed forever (Poynton Foyer Bar) and replaced by another bland Tesco store.

I also agree with all previous comments, Poynton already has an abundance of supermarkets within a very small distance, Hazel Grove, Handforth, Macclesfield, Stockport. We don't need a store of this magnitude in Poynton. Local business will suffer and although this area of Poynton does need something, a Tesco is not the answer. The businesses such as butchers, greengrocers and bakers would all suffer and possibly even close down altogether, this would create empty derilict premises that would be difficult to fill sending Poynton into decline.
If we can then we need to stop this development NOW!!!

Absolutely against Tesco coming to Poynton. Agree with other comments entirely. What will happen to local business traders? Who wants our lovely village to be taken over by greedy Tesco? Why is it needed?
We have ample facilities already.
I found out today that the recent road works on London Rd were to fit heavy duty electric cable - of enough capacity for a supermarket to be run on.
I hope all local residents against the Tesco proposal will be voicing their concerns at all available forums. Contact Nicholas Winterton. Contact your local Planning Officer Stephen Daniels at Macc Borough, email opposition to Planning Department, go to Civic Centre Oct 4th 5th 6th, attend any local meeting such as the AGM of Poynton Residents Association on 24th October. I also urge local traders to get together and argue against Tesco.
We must ACT. If we don't then Tesco will build whatever they want (despite their plans they frequently build larger premises than they gain permission) and our village will DIE.
PLEASE DO SOMETHING!!
