A drop-in centre with big plans for the future has received a funding boost.
The Bridgend Centre, which acts as a community hub for residents in Bollington, has been gifted £500 by wealth management company Equilibrium Asset Management.
The money will be used to install an electric door that will make it easier for disabled visitors and parents with prams.
Rebecca Lea, manager of the centre, on Palmerston Street, said: “We have nearly 1,500 regular users of The Bridgend Centre who use it for many reasons, many of whom have disabilities or bring children and babies in pushchairs. And the current front door is quite old, heavy and in need of updating. So, we are delighted to have won this £500 grant which will go towards the full cost of the new automatic door.”
The charity was chosen through the Wilmslow firm’s Community Support Scheme, which awards grants ranging between £100 and £500 across the region.
Debbie Jukes, partner at the firm, said: “We hope the new automatic door at The Bridgend Centre in Bollington will help many members of the community access a building which lies at the heart of Bollington.”
The charity is now concentrating on raising £8,000 towards an ambitious project to the rear of the centre. They plan to extend a currently disused veranda to create a new community space and contemplation garden.
The project is currently being promoted in the Tesco Supermarket ‘Bags of Help’ scheme, and £2,000 has been pledged by Cheshire East Council as part of its ‘Connected Community Centre’ initiative.
Macclesfield MP David Rutley is supporting the scheme. He said: “The Bridgend Centre’s work to support all of Bollington’s residents, whatever their age, background and abilities, is well-established and much-valued by local residents. This latest project will help the charity to further its important work to reach out to those who are feeling lonely and help improve mental wellbeing by creating a new space for contemplation and calm.”
Individual donations towards the project are also being accepted via www.bridgendcentre.org.uk/home/donate .
