Pupils at the King’s School had a drumming masterclass from a real life rock star.

Drummer and Mercury Prize winner Richard Jupp, who has been with Elbow for 21 years, brought a lifetime’s experience on the stage to 20 students at the King’s School.

He talked about the highs of his career, including performing in front of 150,000 people at Glastonbury.

Richard said: “You have to have an awareness of your breath, thoughts and use positive self talk, which helps to focus the mind.”

He added that relaxing and having fun was important for creativity.

Ian Crawford, King’s director of music, said “Richard was a real inspiration to our pupils, not only in encouraging them to develop their drum technique but also in reminding them to always stay ‘in the moment’ and be aware of what the other musicians around them are doing.

“The session showed the creative input the drummer has not only in perform-ance but in all aspects of the song writing process.

“What was most pleasing was that as our studios filled with the distinctive tune and beat of their classic song ‘One Day Like This’ then so did the back of the room as more and more people ventured in to hear and see a master at work.”
