Time for a best-kept estate competition?

Vic Barlow

I WAS walking my dog on the grass verge around the Weston Estate last night and almost trod on a beer bottle with the neck snapped off in a vicious needlepoint. Having seen a dog lose a leg after an encounter with a broken bottle, I know the kind of injuries broken glass can inflict.

I dropped the bottle into a nearby bin and returned to my training class at the community centre. There's a patch of grass adjoining the centre where young children play and something reflecting in the evening sun caught my eye. In less than five minutes I'd collected enough broken glass to fill a plastic carrier bag.

Why would anyone leave broken glass in a little kids play area? Had it not been spotted, some unsuspecting child could have sustained a horrific injury. If I found so much lethal waste on a ten-minute walk, how much more is lying around? Imagine the anguish of seeing your child lying on the ground with blood pouring from a severed artery or having your pet die from such injuries.

Everyone wants to win The Best Kept Village Award so why not a Best Kept Estate? That's why it was good to see the Weston community at their clean-up last week. They got the kids to litter pick the parks and it was like a party.

In the US, residents make a big event out of cleaning up their neighbourhoods and are proud to have their name plaques on the side of the road announcing their involvement.

There was absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. I'm glad they gave it a shot.

While we're on the subject, can we have the steps around Macclesfield train station and those leading from the bus station down to JJB cleaned up?

They are littered with glass and rubbish.

Liniar park , what is the widening of the foot path all about. is it to help the illegel motor bike riders or to give people a wider berth to navigate the many dog owners who still refuse to Pick It Up.(owner of 2 GSDs) money could have been better spent .

I have to concur with the comments made by Simon Ward. It is unfortunate but I sincerley believe if we ran a best kept estate competition that the youths of Macclesfield would revert to underhand tactics on enemy territory.
