Please don't axe our rate catchers

A RUMOUR reached my ears that our council is planning to rid itself of the pest control department, which seems a rather odd decision given the controversial move to fortnightly collection of refuse.

And at the moment these rumours have been denied.

I'm told rodent infestation is a rapidly expanding problem, which is hardly surprising given the piles of garbage left out to rot.

So what's going on? I can't believe this may have even been considered.

Where would the sense be in reducing pest control at a time of most need?

Having hived off housing and leisure services, there wouldn't be an awful lot left for councillors to do if they removed pest control.

If they dump planning, pest control and refuse collection, they may as well sit around playing Suduko.

We know it would end in tears. At the first outbreak of disease the entire council would panic like err…cornered rats. (Remember the Legionnaire's outbreak at Macclesfield Leisure Centre?)

For once, I sincerely hope my sources are wrong and that MBC have no intention whatsoever of closing the pest control department (or at least have the foresight to merge it with planning where they can keep the 'pests' under control).

What an outrageous proposal. This country seems intent on going backwards. Whatever next? Re-opening the workhouse?
