Councillor Hilda Gaddum slays the dragon

DRIVING along the Silk Road last week I switched on the car radio to hear a familiar voice talking about the Women's Institute.

The interviewer was the combative John Humphrys and who should be on the receiving end? None other than MBC councillor Hilda Gaddum. Being of sound mind I don't normally talk to the radio but I suddenly found myself yelling, 'You tell him Hilda' (a condition for which I am now taking medication).

I'm a huge fan of Mr Humphrys, having heard him slay the fieriest of politicians, but I didn't like him haranguing Coun Gaddum. Having spent half my life ridiculing councillors I felt strangely protective. Maybe he was usurping my role?

I need not have worried, Mrs Gaddum tied him in knots. Clearly more comfortable with her subject than Mr Humphrys she gave an outline of the problems brewing in the WI, encouraged the veteran interviewer to ask questions then rattled off the answers. It was a sterling performance. I think Mr Humphrys was glad when it was over.

Now, if we could only hear a bit more of that in the town hall...

Vic, Concerning the new recycling schedule and pollution. There seem, now, to be 8 lorry trips per month per household to collect four separate sets of recyclable and non-recyclable material. When all rubbish went into one bin there were 4 lorry trips per month per household. Therefore, CO2 emissions have doubled and diesel particulates in the atmosphere have also doubled following the new protocol of recycling. Then, also, there must be further lorry journeys to the recycling plants (i.e. yet more CO2 and diesel particulates) and then the extra energy consumed by the recycling process itself, requiring,er......yet more electricity generation ( with the attendant output of more CO2) and/or more use of oil, or gas to, then, operate the recycling plants. Lastly, we have many householders driving extra journeys to car park based glass, bottle and paper bins where on top of those private motorists' journeys yet more lorries arrive to collect that refuse too. Can anyone help alleviate my concerns about all the extra pollution and the additiional energy consumption by giving a genuine, mathematically correct, equation of the net gains and reductions in CO2 following on from the new protocol of enoforced recycling compared to the old system please? A note of the exact additional cost charged by the recycling companies to the Borough Council would not go amiss either. "Name and address witheld"
