Club is helping kids to box clever

28/12/2004

UNLESS you live in a cave you will be aware of the impact Bolton boxing sensation Amir Kann made at the Athens Olympics. In a matter of days Amir did more for racial harmony than all the boards, panels and quasi-autonomous quangos our neurotic society could invent.

I'm not sure whether every Brit in the North West suddenly became Asian or whether every Asian became a Brit. Whatever it was didn't matter as we celebrated Amir's success together.

Unlike football, boxing has a long history of bringing the best out of people. I don't recall any boxer in my lifetime ever being jeered because of his colour, creed or religion. It's a fantastic sport for teaching discipline, self-control and respect and we have never needed those qualities more than we do today. If your son (or grandson) wants to gain the respect of his peers what better than boxing?

Macclesfield Boys' Boxing Club are holding their very first show at Wilmslow Leisure Centre on February 4 and are hoping to raise funds to send their team abroad. Go and support them, take your kids and talk to Big Kev or any of the coaches.

The club is part of the Police Community Clubs of Great Britain and I can't think of a more exciting way for a young lad to start the New Year.

If you want to contact the club direct call Kevin on 07984-387419.
