Police foiled an armed raid at a jewellers in Wilmslow

Respect to GMP for foiling heist

RESPECT is due to Greater Manchester Police who not only foiled a recent armed robbery at a Wilmslow jewellery store but frog-marched the suspects into custody.

Cheshire was starting to resemble the Wild West with bars, shops and businesses raided at will by dangerous criminals.

I'm all for police restraint, but enough’s more than enough when local stores are used as cash dispensers by armed bandits. For once, the police looked liked they meant business arriving Sweeney style and nicking the lot of them. So my heartfelt congratulations to Chief Constable Peter Fahy and his team.

Yes, I know this kind of robust policing carries risks, and I could find myself walloped by a boisterous bobby simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time but, you know what, I'll take my chances. Life isn’t perfect and if I have to choose between lawless gangsters and over zealous policemen I’m with the boys in blue every time.

Look, we’ve done pussyfoot policing and where did it get us? We had more armed robberies than Dodge City. I’m celebrating and offer no excuses, this a great day for law and order and as Katrina and the Waves would say: "Don’t it make you feel good?" If Mr Fahy and his team care to drop by (on foot) the drinks are on me.

Inspector Gareth Woods nice to know they are finaly getting it together and getting on and helping each other. Its used to be terrible. There i was one night phoning the wilmslow police in a panic, Only to be told that where i was phoning from was not there problem, and to phone cheadle police. i phone cheadle police who then tell me not there problem and to phone wilmslow police. Both were told the nature of the problem, Finaly wilmslow police came out BUT TOO LATE the guy had got away. Complete with the police ID card that he had shown me to get through the door with. (It looked genuine to me) but as he was swigging a bottle of whisky at the time saying that he was off duty an attending a party. I did not let him in to purchase some lemonade that the party he said had run out off. Having several thousands of pounds on the premises at the time albeit locked up in a safe. I was certain id have been threatened with my throat being cut if i had not opened it for him. Personaly i was safe i made sure on that. BUT he was walking around with a police ID card, and HE GOT AWAY.

The proposed merger would have seen Cheshire Constabulary merged with Merseyside so there would have been no capacity for GMP to take on Poynton or Disley as they would have remained with the same coverage that they have always had. The whole issue that led to the mergers being discussed in the first place was a concern that some neighbouring forces were poor at communicating with each other. I am happy to say that the sharing of intelligence with GMP is extremely good and the number of arrests that both forces make as a result of joint intelligence is testament to that.

I know residents in Disley and Poynton who's villages border GMP have raised the question if GMP can look after their policing on a number occasions to no avail.

There was a campaign a couple of years ago for local businesses in Poynton to tempt GMP officers into Poynton with discounts at food outlets.

Its a great shame the force merger plans were abandoned. Would have kicked our local police into touch.

It seems that we at last agree on something, Vic did not need to make the reference to the poor chap from the G20 demo in an article that was praising professional police work.

Slinky you seem to be very touchy. I cannot see where Eric has levelled any untoward comment to you. He has just commented, as he is allowed to do. Nowhere can I see that he has even inferred you were a criminal. You seem eager to have a go at others but you are easily offended are you not?

I like the comments in your address Spider, I was not aware that you had been away, but even puppets appear welcome.

You are, however, correct in your quote “fundamental principle of English law is that someone is innocent until proven guilty”. So if your friend Slinky’s comment is levelled at the demo’s in London, no one has been found guilty of anything, which make Slinky’s remark to be right over the top.

Read the article again Eric, Vic infers that the death of an inoccent man is not too high a price to pay.

I value life more than that, for the record, never as much as a caution mate.

Can I ask why his comment directed at me was posted?

He can infer that I am a criminal? how is that fair play?

Slinky made a fair point. Shame about the ad hom response. Nowhere does he say that he is ungrateful for lawful policing; that is simply a straw man. fundamental principle of English law is that someone is innocent until proven guilty. Summary justice, which VB praises (and which the Police didn't do) is contrary to our hard won English principles and freedoms and rather counters those things of which we are rightly proud as a nation.

We seem to be entering the silly comment season and the reading of events elsewhere and twisting the circumstances to suit. I am convinced that I have read where brave Police officers have been severely injured and even killed putting their lives and livelihood on the line for ungrateful Slinky wizards.

The incident being referred to by VicB was widely reported some weeks ago and the operation was done by the Greater Manchester Force in the Cheshire area. That might have been because the last time something like this happened all Cheshire did was to park a marked police car in Alderley Edge, remember it, and they did not catch any of the previous miscreants..

Erm - a man died after being whalloped by an over zealous policeman, it is in poor taste to make that comment Victor. What if that had been your dad or son?, how would you feel about over zealous policemen punching people for being in the wrong place then?

A tad different I would imagine.
