Canalside Radio deserves its licence to thrill

CONGRATULATIONS to Nick Wright and all his team who have worked tirelessly for over four years to bring true community radio to the area.

It takes a lot of conviction to rally the troops week-in, week out for a radio station that doesn’t exist – but that’s what Nick’s had to do.

After several dummy runs, Canalside Radio finally has its full time FM licence and will commence broadcasting this autumn.

It’s been an amazing test of faith for all concerned and I’m sure the quality of programmes will be all the better for it.

Canalside is probably not the station you want to listen to if you’re expecting interviews with Gordon Brown or Hillary Clinton, and the Arctic Monkeys are unlikely to turn up at Clarence Mill, but you will hear real community radio with genuine local presenters.

It’s a great triumph for Nick and his team and could not have happened to a nicer guy. Nick Wright has entertained us at weddings, birthdays, pubs and parties for over two decades and what he doesn’t know about this area is probably not worth knowing.

I’ll certainly be tuning in to Canalside. Let’s hope Ofcom don’t strangle it with restrictions.

Everyone has a right to hear their local community radio station and Nick must be free to give the listeners what they want.

I can’t wait.

In their application Canalside say they will cover an area including north Macclesfield(although they haven't told their 'sponsors' in the south, east and west. Perhaps it's time for a community radio station for Macclesfield?
