Traffic restrictions are killing trade

Vic Barlow

WHAT’S happening in our town centres? Unless there’s an urgent plan, they are in terminal decline. Out-of-town superstores continue to expand while town centre retailers close on a weekly basis.

The writing is surely on the wall when McDonald’s can’t make their town centre stores viable.

Macclesfield and Wilmslow retailers can’t wait for redevelopment, they need assistance now. As out-of-town shopping becomes ever more convenient, town centre shops die, and putting up parking charges is NOT a strategy.

If MBC don’t understand what’s happening, they should appoint someone who does. Congleton offers free parking to all town centre shoppers – it’s not the total answer, but it helps.

Swingeing fines, double yellow lines and an army of wardens patrolling the streets is not going to lure shoppers into town. It may bolster council coffers and improve traffic flow, but it will do nothing for embattled retailers.
