Workers across the town raised almost £15,000 in support of the victims of the Bosley disaster and their families.
The Express joined forces with Silk 106.9 to encourage workers to donate at least £1 to those affected by the massive explosion at Wood Flour Mill.
The response was phenomenal. From beauty salons to banks, more than 170 businesses came out in support of our Bring a Pound to Work appeal.
All the money raised has gone to the Bosley Victims Appeal, a community fund set up by Sylvia Jenkinson from Bosley Parish Council.
The total disaster fund now stands at around £70,000 – and grows bigger every day.
Rhiannon McDowall, deputy editor of the Express, said: “We are thrilled to have raised such a fantastic amount for such a worthwhile cause.
“The tragedy of Bosley has touched the heart of our community and the workers and families of those affected by the disaster will continue to be at the centre of our focus.
“We hope this money, together with the fantastic amounts raised by groups across the community, will go some way to helping the Bosley community to rebuild itself.”
Donations were collected by staff and presenters at Silk 106.9. Among those who gave generously were: Tomkinson Heating; Northwood; Natwest; JTAPE; The White Room; Cheshire Gap; Simply Bliss; Gurkha Dining; The Quint Group; Marks and Spencer; Stonier Insurance; B&M; Bollin Dale Engineering; Be Beautiful; RBS Chestergate; Dominos; The Superbike Factory; Corporate Accounting Solutions; Peaks and Plains Housing Trust; Circus Starr and Virgin trains.
David Flavell, station manager at Silk 106.9, said: “Everyone at the station has been overwhelmed by the response of the business community.
“In an instant people lost their lives, became badly injured and at least 50 people lost their jobs when the mill was completely destroyed. Bosley is at the heart of our community and we wanted to do something to help.”
Among other fundraising events that have taken place in the last week was Wild Boar Clay Pigeon Club Shoot, which saw £3,100 donated to the appeal.
Meanwhile, organisers of Cheshire Game and Angling Fair, which takes place at Peover Park, Over Peover, on Sunday, August 16, are supporting the appeal.
