Bag a bargain

WHERE'S the cheapest city centre place to shop? Helen Crosbie found out ...

TESCO - easy to locate items, clear signs. Quite a basic selection of food, nothing much to tempt me away from my regular shopping list.

Don't enjoy the queuing system, feels a bit like a meat market but, then, I did come during the office lunch hour. Nothing inspiring apart from a few good offers. Not the most expensive, but still considerably dearer than Aldi.

CO-OP - nice, new, airy shop, lots of staff around to ask questions (although two were new and didn't know how to find the price of bananas per kilo). Good location for people coming from Victoria or shopping in Exchange Square. Efficient queue system that went down quickly.

I like the fact that all their white wine is refrigerated. Expensive, but they do have a good reputation for Fair Trade. Probably not the best if you want to save money and not the planet.

ALDI - Impressive store, great array of products on display, quality meats and cheeses are extremely competitively priced compared to other stores, long queues at the checkout but staff very quick so don't have to wait too long.

By far the cheapest, although they only stock their own brands, which won't be to everyone's taste.

ARNDALE MARKET - really interesting food stalls, a feast for the eyes. Fantastic choice of international cuisine; Greek food, Italian deli, Chinese, Thai and Sushi, Polish food stall - I could eat here every day of the week and have something totally different.

Stall holders were keen to help and provide further information about their products. A lovely shopping experience - if you have the time. Shop carefully and there are bargains to be had, but some items were a lot more expensive than the supermarkets.
