Co-op's card blunder

19/ 5/2008

MELVILLE THOMSON from Arnside, Cumbria (right), was alarmed by the paperwork that came with his new Co-operative Bank credit card.

When he removed the card from the covering letter, he found that the last four digits of his card number, as well as the additional three-digit security code, had been reproduced on the piece of paper below.

Melville was concerned that if he hadn't spotted the problem his card details could have fallen into the wrong hands. The Co-op says the problem was caused by the pressure of the Royal Mail sorting machine, which transferred an image of the security number on the back of the card on to the card carrier.

A spokeswoman said: `The issue is being fully investigated and will be resolved shortly.'

ACTION: Keep card details safe and shred old documents containing your personal details.
