Bruising doesn't look good

19/ 5/2008

Q I play a lot of contact sports and often get bruises. They aren't a big problem but I don't like the look of them. Do you know how I could heal them quickly?

A Bruises occur when we bump into things because the tissue beneath the skin gets damaged. When this happens blood from broken capillaries near the skins surface leaks under the skin, causing discoloration.

For most of us bruises are just a part of life and part of our body's reaction to injury. However if you are worried about a bruise you must seek medical advice, especially if a bruise lasts longer than two weeks, seems to appear for no reason, is situated near your eye or the area is getting more painful or swelling.

For a little help with bruises you could try taking Arnica 30c or 200c. Take one dose, two or three times a day. This popular first-aid remedy is one of the most effective available, as most bumps and shocks to the body benefit from a dose of Arnica.

The properties of this plant (Arnica Montana) are also of use when applied externally. Being indigenous to mountainous regions the plant was traditionally used by climbers to sooth aches and pains obtained on this rough terrain. Neal's Yard Remedies stock a selection of Arnica creams and oils to apply directly to the effected area.

Please note that Arnica must only be taken internally in the highly diluted homeopathic potencies.
