My bum is too small

19/ 5/2008

Q I think my bottom is too small.

A friend brought me back from the US a pair of knickers that are padded and look really good in tight fitting clothes. The confidence I have when wearing them is unbelievable.

Obviously, I can't wear these with a swimsuit and have to take them off at night!

I have even had a personal trainer for six months with very little or no result. What are my options, if any?

A Most of us spend our time trying to make out bottoms slimmer, but I understand how you feel - curves are very attractive and feminine. I have seen the underwear you mention and it does really give a good impression. As with gel bras, they look good in clothes and that's it.

You have tried the first suggestion I would have given (i.e. exercise).

Fat transfer has historically been another option. You need a donor area to take fat from; our body naturally absorbs fat when transferred.

However it does tend to absorb the fat at different rates and this can often create unevenness.

With time `top ups' are needed, this obviously means more expense, time off work and healing all over again.

Increasingly a better option would be a buttock implant (Gluteoplasty).

This procedure is now becoming very popular in the UK. In fact in Brazil it is becoming more popular than breast implants! Just like a breast implant, they come in different sizes, feel very natural and keep their shape.

There is an incision line between the buttock cheeks and the round/oval smooth silicone implant is placed in the pocket created behind the upper buttock muscle.

This procedure usually requires a two night stay in hospital and approximately two weeks away from work. There are a very limited number of cosmetic surgeons who carry out this procedure.

My advice, as always, is to request details on how many buttock enhancement procedures the surgeon has performed. GMC credentials and qualifications should also be checked. Ask to see photographs and if possible to speak to a patient who has completed the procedure.
