A new pedestrian crossing has been installed at a spot where a pensioner tragically died.

Work finished on the puffin crossing near the Co-op on Hurdsfield Road on Thursday last week and has been used for the first time.

It follows a tragic incident in March when an elderly resident at Harry Lawson Court was hit by a car as she crossed the road on her way to the Co-Op.

Jeanne de Silva Jayasundera, 71, suffered fatal injuries after the collision with a Ford KA and died in hospital the next day.

A campaign was launched for a new crossing spearheaded by Macclesfield Central councillor Janet Jackson, whose mother is a resident at Harry Lawson Court, and backed by the council leader Michael Jones and Hurdsfield councillor Steve Carter.

The council's highways team carried out an investigation and assessment of the road and gave the new crossing the go-ahead.

Coun Jackson said: “At last the pedestrian crossing on Hurdsfield Road is up and running.

“Works were finally completed last Thursday and it is now in use.

“It’s great news for everyone in the area, from the young school children and families to the elderly residents.

“The elderly will particularly find it useful now when crossing the road in order to catch the bus into town.

"I must thank the Highways officers Paul Kenyon and Rob Welch who worked so hard to ensure that we have now got this crossing.

“It’s a great achievement for all their team and I want to thank them all on behalf of the residents who will benefit so much from this."

Councillor Michael Jones, Leader of Cheshire East Council, said: “We said we would act and we have done so.

“I am pleased to have offered my full support from the start of this scheme and believe this new crossing will bring significant benefits to the local community.”
