A national polo player says she hasn’t given up her dream of becoming an Olympic medal winner.

Seventeen-year-old Rosie Huck, from Poynton, competed with the Women’s Great Britain Senior Water Polo squad as they beat current World Champions, Spain, at the Commonwealth Water Polo Championships.

The Manchester High School for Girls pupil trains with the Great Britain Senior Women’s Water Polo squad and debuted in the team last year despite her inexperience at senior level.

And after some great performances she now appears regularly in the senior squad.

Rosie’s aspirations to be an Olympic Gold medal winner in the sport were dented recently as the Women’s Water Polo team’s funding was withdrawn by UK Sport.

Rosie is now weighing her options to maintain the prospects of a career in professional water polo after she finishes her A Levels next year.

Rosie said: “The game against the current World Champions was amazing and although we didn’t get through to the next round, we showed what we’ve got and proved that we are a fantastic team, capable of beating the best in the world.

“I was devastated when I found out about the funding cut, and I have had to change my plans after I finish school.

“My heart was set on training towards the Olympics with the GB team and studying locally at university.

“Now that Rio is looking unlikely, I still want to play at a high level so I am looking at options of universities and professional leagues in Europe, or possibly the American University League.”

Rosie’s coaches say that the teen always stood out when competing in the sport.

Darren Jones, Rosie’s school’s water polo coach, said: “I can still remember when Rosie started playing water polo in Year 6 at school.

“It was clear early on that she had a talent, but what impressed all the coaches the most was her drive and determination to keep improving.

“I am sure the her best is still to come and she is capable of being one of the top players in the world.”
