One in five schools in Macclesfield will not open fully today (Wednesday) due to a strike by a teaching union.

Hundreds of pupils are due to have lessons disrupted by the one-day action which will cause headaches for mums and dads across the town forced to cancel work or scramble to find childcare.

Rainow Primary will NOT open at all, while Poynton High, St Alban’s Catholic Primary, Tytherington High and Upton Priory Primary will be partially closed.

The National Union of Teachers claim the walkout is the only way they can resolve their dispute over performance-related pay, pension changes and an increasing workload for teaching staff.

The strike action is taking place across the country. The Department for Education has condemned the strikes - saying all they will do is disrupt children’s education. But Avis Gilmore, NUT regional secretary, said: “Teachers’ workloads are intolerable, their national pay framework has been dismantled and they are being asked to work to the age of 68 or later for a full pension.”
