A couple of married Silkmen fans have celebrated 60 years together.

Joan and Donald Greaves, of Dudley Walk, Macclesfield, enjoyed their diamond wedding anniversary last Thursday (March 20).

The pair moved to Macclesfield in 1968, and soon after moving to the area their commitment to Macclesfield Town FC bloomed.

Since then they have attended the Moss regularly, and up until recently the season ticket holders went to every home and away game.

Joan, 80, was a clerical officer at Macclesfield Hospital for more than 30 years. She said: “Donald asked me to dance at Manchester’s High Street Baths, and that was that, we just clicked. Two years later at the same dance hall, he asked me to marry him.

“We’ve had some good times together as Macc Town fans, going to Wembley three times was a highlight, winning the FA Trophy there in 1996.

“I used to work in the shop selling merchandise, and our daughter, Elaine, looks after the mascots.”

As well as the Silkmen the couple share a love of jazz music and Big Bands, and used to regularly travel to Jazz festivals around the country.

The couple celebrated their anniversary with two children, three grand-children and three great-grandchildren at Chesters Restaurant in Macclesfield town centre.

When asked about the secret to their marriage’s longevity, Joan said: “We just get on. We do everything together. Donald is the best husband.”

Donald, 83, said: “We get on so well and share many things.

“Joan is a brilliant wife and has been a wonderful mother.”
