The town’s Christmas lights will burst into life on Saturday with a festive celebration in the Market Place.

Macclesfield Town Council has plans for a grand firework display, a Christmas market, craft fair, street performers, choirs and a brass band.

The event starts at 12pm when Macclesfield Youth Brass will be perform around the Christmas Tree.

Then throughout the day there will be performances from MADS, The Mydel Choir, Callum Jackson and the New Hope Club, as well as many others.

There will be some small fair rides and street entertainers as well as facepainting and balloon modelling.

Father Christmas has been given the honour of turning on the lights at 5pm.

Councillor Beverley Dooley urged all residents to make the even a success.

She said: “It should be a great atmosphere and a great way to start the Christmas season. It will be fun for all the family.”

A massive Christmas tree was installed in the centre of Market Place on Tuesday.

Drivers should be aware that Market Place, Castle Street, Churchside and Church Street will be closed to vehicles from 8am on the day of the event.

There will be free parking from 10am on car park on Duke Street, the Town Hall, Exchange Street, Churchill Way, Park Green, Sunderland Street and Waters Green.
