Lights, camera, action was called as a Hollywood star and camera crews visited Macclesfield to film the second series of a blockbuster show.

Dozens of crew members and actor Cillian Murphy took over the town’s Christ Church to film scenes for the second series of Peaky Blinders.

The TV show is a gangster epic set in Birmingham just after World War I, based on the historic gang who wear razor blades in their cap and are led by boss Tommy Shelby, played by Murphy.

The production team filmed scenes within Christ Church, on Bridge Street, throughout the day on Thursday (May 8).

The Grade II listed church has sat empty for more than 30 years, but as well as featuring in the series is also set to star itself at this year’s Barnaby Festival.

And Peaky Blinder’s producer, Laurie Borg, said it suited the program’s needs perfectly.

He said: “We were looking for a Presbyterian church and Christ Church was put forward.

"When we saw it we couldn’t believe our luck. It’s very beautiful and exactly what we needed.

"Filming here has been great we love Macclesfield, everyone has been so welcoming.”

The show proved a hit after premiering last year on BBC2, with the second series due to air this autumn.

Tom Hardy is set to appear in the new series, but viewers will have to wait and see if Sam Neill's chief inspector Chester Campbell returns.
