Look out for the Barnaby brochure out this week! The ‘Space’ theme is explored in throughout the ten days from Friday 17 to Sunday 26 June in all shapes and sizes.
WASHING LINES
The Barnaby washing lines, last seen strung high across the pedestrianised streets in 2014, will be back again this year indicating that the festivities are about to start!
The lines were the brainchild of tailor, textile engineer and volunteer Brita Hirsch and refer to Macclesfield’s textile heritage and it’s sense of community.
The beautifully crafted, oversized laundry makes us smile - and confuses visitors! This year a new team of volunteers has taken over, with Irene Dearnaley, Kathryn Willcox, Susie Williamson, Victoria Scholes and Fiona Williams currently working hard on the textiles.
Working out of at Macclesfield Community ArtSpace, they are sprucing up some of the 200 garments and creating a few new ones.
So look out for a sprinkling of spacedust above our heads!
THE MACCLES-FIELD CALL OUT
Market Place will host a new pop-up space for Barnaby which we’re calling The Maccles-field.
This 5m x 4m patch of green will first appear on Sunday 19 June complete with artificial grass, a white picket fence and a sign saying ‘Please keep ON the grass’!
The idea is that the Field will host all manner of things - tea parties, dancing, quizzes, workshops, pitch and putt - anything to entice and involve festival goers and passers-by.

SPACEPOD CHALLENGE
To celebrate Macclesfield’s long association with astronomy and aerospace engineering, we’ve been working with Macclesfield College on a competition which invites teams to find solutions to a real ‘space’ problem - how to protect a pod full of delicate scientific equipment as it falls to the surface of a far away planet.
Except in this case it’s a fresh egg being dropped from a great height onto the Market Place cobbles!
The teams will demonstrate their inventions in front of a live audience on Saturday 25 June.
