David Coverdale was working as a boutique clerk in Redcar, Cleveland, when he sent a demo tape and an old boy scouts photograph to members of Deep Purple. He was recruited and spent three years with the band, before recording solo albums. But he is best known as lead singer of Spandex-clad metal icons Whitesnake - who released a debut album in 1978 before becoming huge in America throughout the 80s. Now living in Nevada, he reformed the band in 2002. They play Manchester Apollo on Saturday.

The first thing I do when I wake up is...

have a cup of tea and then meditate.
