THE comics who created the strange world of The Mighty Boosh have spent years building up a cult following.

Although their bizarre alternative universe made it onto television only a couple of years ago, The Mighty Boosh has existed in one form or another since 1998, when Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding took it to the Edinburgh Fringe.

The pair had come up with the idea earlier, while working on Stewart Lee's King Dong vs Moby Dick show.

As the title suggests, this involved the actors playing a giant penis and a whale - and was probably a good indication of the surreal brand of comedy that was to follow.

The Mighty Boosh, named after a haircut Noel's brother - and show co-star - Michael had when he was younger, later enjoyed incarnations as a radio and television series, before going out on the road again for this year's tour.

The show is sometimes based around a zoo called The Zooniverse, where the action begins before veering off into some incredibly odd places, as well as a flat in Dalston, Hackney.

The main characters include Howard TJ Moon, a self proclaimed jazz maverick who often falls far short of his intellectual pretensions, and would-be "Goth fairy" Vince Noir, who can talk to animals and has a love of Gary Numan and Mick Jagger.

Most of the adventures involve the arguments between this classic Odd Couple pairing.

But there are other characters including Naboo The Enigma - a laid-back shaman who used to work as the zoo's kiosk operator - and Bollo - the oldest ape in captivity, who has a DJ spot at the local roller disco, once hosted a chat show, and murdered his childhood friend by first cutting off his feet, then his head.

The Mighty Boosh appear at the Apollo on Wednesday and Thursday.
